What is a Year of Crew?
Hylton Crew essentially has three seasons:
- Fall Training (Prince William Crew Association High School
Summer Novice Camp)
- Operated by the Prince
William Rowing Club (PWCA)
- Hylton participates along with other novice rowers from Forest Park,
Gar-Field, Woodbridge and Potomac high schools.
- Fall is the best time for novice rowers to start because the Fall season
is designed to be lots of fun and to teach rowing basics. You just have to
want to try. We will help you with all the rest!
- Winter Training
- Strength and endurance training using weight and rowing machines.
- Winter is where all rowers will maintain their fitness level and
novice rowers learn more about crew. Everyone benefits because you
will be more ready for the Spring season if you participate in the
Winter Training.
- Spring Regatta Season
- This is our competitive season!
- On-the-water training normally starts in late February and typically
runs all five weekday afternoons. There may also be Saturday
morning practices until the regatta season officially starts at the end
of March.
- Rowers will be placed in specific boats based on experience level,
weight, and ability. Emphasis for Spring practices is placed on
fitness and developing teamship and faster rowing times for each boat.
- Most regattas are held on the Occoquan at Sandy Run.
Occasionally Hylton Crew will participate in regattas on the Anacostia.
We also participate in several "away" regattas each season, such as
Mathews (a day trip), the Stotesbury Cup in Philadelphia (several nights
in a hotel), and possibly Nationals or some other large regatta.
- For local Occoquan Regattas, rowers will typically be dropped off at
Oxford Boat House at
Lake Ridge Park and will row over to the "Point" at
Sandy Run. Spectators should plan to arrive at Sandy Run an hour
or more before their race begins, because it takes a while to either
hike or catch a shuttle van to the regatta viewing area.
- Parking for regular Occoquan regattas costs $10 per car at the park
(arrive before 11:00 a.m.) or $5 per car at the commuter lot at Route
123 and Old Bridge (Old Hechinger Lot). Shuttle buses will run
from the commuter lot to Sandy Run starting at 6:00 a.m. on regatta
days.
- Regattas don't just happen -- they take a lot of work. Each
Hylton Crew family will be expected to fill one "mandatory volunteer
slot" during the Spring Crew season. These slots are assigned to us
by the folks from the National Capital Area Scholastic Rowing
Association (NCASRA).
